One may not do whatever one wants with the language; it was there before we were; it will survive us. If one affects the language of anything, it must be done in a refined way, by respecting its secret law through disrespect. That's it, unfaithful fidelity: when I do violence to the French language, I do it with a refined respect for what I believe to be an injunction of this language, in its life, its evolution. I don't read without smiling, sometimes in contempt, those who believe they can, without any love, rape the French language's "classic" spelling or syntax, with their little airs of prematurely ejaculating virgins, while the great French language, as untouchable as ever, watches them do it while waiting for the next one.
